“Your Book Proposal Is Your Calling Card to Literary Agents and Publishers…
In Fact, After CONSISTENTLY Selling Book Proposals to MAJOR PUBLISHING COMPANIES,
I’m Ready to Reveal My Proven Techniques
So You Can, too!”

From: Stephanie Gunning, New York, NY, USA
Wednesday, 8:44 a.m.

Dear Friend,

Writing a book sounds exciting and profitable, right?

You’ve been to workshops and lectures where the seminar leaders are obviously cashing in on their books and other information products at the back of the room, and maybe you’ve thought, “WOW! I’m just as smart as THAT guy (or gal) and I’m an expert in my own industry. I think I’ll write my own book!”

Well, you’re right! You could write a book and you could profit from it if you can persuade a publisher to buy it (or publish it yourself). That’s the good news.

The bad news is that you can’t just walk in off the street and expect the major publishing companies to want to invest their time, energy, and resources in your book. You need an excellent, point-by-point book proposal to hand them, which addresses their concerns and speaks to them in terms they understand.

“The trouble is that most first-time writers haven’t a clue of what needs to go in a proposal or why a publisher asks to see the elements in a standard proposal… How Do You Analyze YOUR TARGET MARKET, for example? COMPARABLE BOOKS! What’s that about?”

I have no doubt that you feel compelled to write a book. And that you have something to say that is special, entertaining, and could perhaps help to make the world a better place. (Otherwise you wouldn’t even be reading this page.) Maybe you’ve even been dreaming about doing your book for years.

Publishing companies want to publish GOOD BOOKS. That’s true. But they ONLY invest in authors today who understand the business of MARKETING.

Before you try to impress publishers with your ideas… You need to design a clever, well thought out PLAN to put your book in the hands of readers.

No readers…no sales. No possibility for sales…no book contracts for you.

“If You Want to Get a Good Book Contract You Need to Hone Your Unique Topic… and Draft an Excellent Marketing Plan — You Need to Know Who Your Readers Are!”

Sadly, it can be tough to sell a book. Even I, who was an in-house acquisitions editor for 12 years and worked as a freelance book doctor for top-notch literary agents and publishers after that, wrote a few proposals that missed the mark and failed to impress. You can do everything that seems “right” and still not find the appreciation you feel you deserve. When my books didn’t sell I was sad, then mad, and then I rolled up my sleeves and went “back to school” to educate myself.

Today, after revisiting everything I knew from working in-house and making a purposeful study of book marketing online and in-house, and speaking with dozens of my colleagues (agents, editors, publicists, successful authors) from all sectors of the book industry, I have written 17 published books and helped hundreds of writers (who are my students and coaching clients) draft their book proposals, many of which have been placed with the most significant houses in their categories: business, spirituality, health, new science, cooking, and so forth.

“Stephanie’s suggestions and work with me were paramount in creating the enthusiasm with which the editors of New World Library Publishing and several other publishers looked at my book proposal for Soul Currency. In fact, I got interest right away from eight publishers before we narrowed it down.”

~Ernest D. Chu, author of Soul Currency: Being Well Paid to Do What Really Fulfills You (New World Library 2008) http://www.soulcurrency.org/

“Finally! The Truth About Selling a Book to a Publisher… Even If You’ve Never Written Before”

Reliably, writers that get clear about the key ideas in their books, and know their audiences and how to reach them, sell tons of books. Publishers know this!

On the other hand, writers who want to throw the kitchen sink into their books, and can’t stay focused on appealing to a narrow set of readers generally get lost in the glut of books on the bookstore shelves. Publishers also know this!

As a former senior editor at Bantam-Doubleday-Dell and editor at HarperCollins, a book doctor, a ghostwriter and co-writer, and editor, with a 20-plus year track record of producing bestselling books that have appeared on national bestseller lists and the bestseller lists of the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble, I know what I’m talking about. I don’t want you to waste one precious minute of your time and energy going in the wrong direction.

"Stephanie Gunning is the best friend any author, acquiring editor, or agent could have. As an agent, working with Stephanie always gives me a rare sense of sureness that the manuscript will be delivered to the publisher on time, and beautifully realized. With the half dozen projects we've teamed on I have been impressed with her ability to both nurture authors and introduce them to the cold realities of the business beyond writing their book—partnering with their publishers to promote and sell their books!"

~Stephany Evans, President, Fine Print Literary Management http://www.fineprintlit.com/

Editors at the publishing companies need your help to impress their bosses—the editorial directors, publishers, and other decision makers in-house—and to explain your book ideas to their sales staff, who ultimately go out in the field to persuade bookstores to carry your title. The book proposal is the tool they need.

If you recognize and embrace this simple truth instead of trying to circumvent it (essentially reinventing the entire industry) and bypass the way things are traditionally done, your route to publication will be much swifter and surer.

Please, let me help you to shortcut your path to becoming a published author!

Marketing is the engine that drives the publishing industry. As an author you are expected to be the expert (authority) on your subject matter. Who are you writing for? What are their habits? I’m going to teach you how to identify your audience and create a book that appeals to their sensibility. Your format and approach is key to pleasing readers, and it comes right out of your core insights.

You’re going to learn how to track success in the marketplace of ideas, where to go to evaluate trends, and the best way to research your competitors—ALL IN THE INTEREST of making it super easy and quick to write and sell your book.

In this session, you’ll learn how to think like a publishing professional, someone who actively crafts words for a living and gets better at it every time.

"Stephanie is a star. With her counsel, the book publishing process was completely demystified. I’d recommend her without hesitation to anyone considering writing a nonfiction book."

~Marci Alboher, online career columnist for The New York Times, author of One Person/Multiple Careers: A New Model for Work/Life Success (Warner Books, February 2007) http://www.heymarci.com/

Session #2: Your Author Bio and Promotional Activities

Publishers would love for YOU TO SUCCEED! Honestly, they are on your side. There are ways to help your publisher to make best use of your time and talents, and it begins long before you sell a book. Bestselling authors make space for their books to inhabit by getting involved in specific practical activities.

We’re going to discuss the key elements of an author publishing “platform,” which is the phrase acquisitions editors use to describe how best to launch your book. If you want to move fast, then you cannot hesitate to set up a strong PR campaign. I’m going to show you some of the insider tricks of the trade to do that for you!

In this session, you’ll learn how to Expertize and Empower yourself!

"I have rarely worked with an editor who is so adept at content editing, copyediting, structure, and maintaining an author’s voice . . . while managing to enhance the entire project."

~Jill Kramer, Editorial Director, Hay House

Session #3: How to Outline and Refine

Probably a full half of the work of writing a book comes in the outlining process. What needs to come first? What needs to come last? How can a reader grow while reading your book? What are your format and approach? How are you going to get the job done? This is the whole Magilla, fleshed out and wearing a gorilla suit. An editor never wants to guess what you’re going to do.

In this session, I’m going to explain how to define and then redefine what you’re doing as you work through (and rework) your proposal in layers. Don’t be “done” until you’re satisfied that you’ve given it your all. In addition, I’m going to talk about the creative process, and learning to be the best creator you can be.

"Stephanie Gunning is quite simply a writing Goddess. She is a total professional who is also incredibly fun to work with. And I should also mention, she is intuitive, insightful, and brilliant. I owe much of the success of my Hot Chocolate for the Mystical Soul series to her editing skills."

~Arielle Ford, America's #1 Book Publicist, creator of the "Everything You Should Know Publishing System," President, The Ford Group, creator of the Hot Chocolate for the Mystical Soul Series www.everythingyoushouldknow.com

Session #4: Your Summary and Samples

We save the first page of the proposal for last, because only by the fourth session are you really going to be ready to explain everything about your book project. Then, you’re going to draft your sample chapters and make them match your explanation. How do you know how much sample writing to give? What does it need to include? How much time should be dedicated to writing? Why won’t publishers just trust you that you’ll do what you promised to do?

This final step can be the hold up in selling a book, or it can be the piece of your proposal that salvages a project that would otherwise be dead in the water. Here is where editors get their second burst of enthusiasm.

PLUS… You’ll Receive Electronic Companion Workbooks for Each of the Four Audio Sessions to Guide You Through the Steps I Reveal

I want to make this proposal writing process as easy and quick for you as possible, so I have created some worksheets and note taking space for you to gather information, doing effective “homework assignments” in between class sessions. Here’s where your assistant can help you get organized or you can organize your own ideas and insights.

Perhaps the biggest holdback authors have to finding an agent, selling a manuscript, and marketing a finished book, is understanding where that book fits into their bigger mission and how it aligns with their identity. That's where branding comes in. Writing, you see, is a business. I don't want you ever to forget that. Who are you? Who do you serve?

Bonus Audio #2: “Three Secrets of Persuasion: Great Speaking and Writing Tools Drawn from Shakespeare” John Basil, Esteemed Stage Director and Acting Coach, Co-Founder of American Globe Theatre and Conservatory www.johnbasil.com

Every great speaker and every great writer wants to be persuasive . . . Playwright William Shakespeare understood that clearly 400 years ago. A main reason his plays are so incredibly engaging is that the characters employ the tools of rhetoric to debate issues and solve problems. And you can use these secrets, too! Trust me, if you ever have to give a speech or performance, evaluate scripts or other documents, or need to draft a compelling written or spoken argument, this information will improve your clarity and boost your impact substantially.

John told me that the most compelling and effective writers and speakers know THREE important tricks to capture their audience's attention, sway opinion, and win debates. I believe these techniques are so powerful that I wanted him to tell you about them himself. Begin developing stronger arguments and attracting more support for your ideas during this special hour.

Learn:
  • How to create a foundation for your case by leading your listeners through your internal logic
  • The rocket-launching formulas of questions-and-answers and comparisons-and-contrasts
  • The single deadliest vocal mistake you can make that bores and distracts at least 90 percent of audiences
  • How to ensure that your listeners stay alert and focused

Bonus Audio #3: “Journaling to Overcome Creative Blocks” Sandy Grason, Manifestation Expert and Bestselling Author of Journalution www.sandygrason.com

If you’re interested in writing books and articles, or you do creative work of any kind, journaling is an easy and effective way to support yourself. My conversation with Sandy was electrifying. Four years ago we worked together on completing her book proposal, today her book has been in print for over two years from New World Library, and she is living her mission of making a contribution in the world.

Bonus Audio #4: “How to Get Your Book Jumping Off the Shelves!” Brian Feinblum, Planned TV Arts Chief Marketing Officer www.plannedTVarts.com

Publicity is the art of getting attention, and it can make book buyers hungry to read your book. That translates into sales, which translates into money in your pocket...your message shared...and more.

But what actually works in book publicity today? How can you get people's attention amid the noise of information? Is it hard or easy? Does it have to be costly? I'm sure you'd like to know the answers.

During the one-hour call, I asked Brian tons of real, practical details about book publicity via:
  • Radio
  • TV
  • Print
  • Internet
  • Local tours

“Okay, Stephanie — I’m Ready!”

Because I’m sharing so much of my personal experience and proprietary insights into writing a saleable book proposal on these calls, I could easily ask a potential client $5,000 up to $8,000 for applying the same information  — AND GET IT.

This program is packed with value. But I don’t want price to be a barrier for you when it comes to investing in your unique book concept. This program could be the difference between attracting an enthusiastic publisher for your book (thus fulfilling your dream) and drafting a book proposal that’s dead on arrival.
